Blood drinking ants?
This rumour surfaced in 2006, it spread to various chats sites and forums and then to Wikipedia. The reports seemed to have started from alleged comments a resident at Ali Curung made to Richard Shears, these comments were taken from a book he published called 'Bloodstain' page 17. The comments made it onto internet chat sites and forums then to Wikipedia in 2009. Then the wikipedia comments were copied verbatim into various blogs and webpages.
It was said that no one noticed flies or ants trying to eat the blood on the highway, it was then assumed that the reason for this was because the blood was mixed with a chemical used to preserve blood. Another theory was that the blood was stored in a container and had 'gone 'off so to speak. This rumour is aligned with a popular theory that Peter staged his own death and he took his own blood, via a syringe carried it in a container and deposited at the crime scene.
There seems to be no way to prove or disprove this rumour, however even if there were no ants or flies what does this mean? I don't think it would mean the blood was mixed with preservative. I am quite sure police forensics would have picked up on that during their testing. I think blood mixed with dirt may not have been too attractive to insects. Road kill would have attracted insects and birds but dried blood on its own may not have.
